Sandra Frank is one of the most distinctive women photographers in the United States. She lives and works on the Central Coast of California and has been a commercial photographer since 1989 primarily in Silicon Valley. Her clients consist of many of the major high tech companies, including Sun Microsystems, Oracle, and IBM to name a few. In addition, her floral still lifes are represented nationally.
She has taught photography at San Jose State University as well as several community colleges since 2000, and is currently pursuing her Master’s of Fine Art.
While most photographs are created by a quick click of the shutter, Sandra’s lighting technique is a time intensive process used to bring out subtleties in color and texture. Using a technique called ‘painting with light’ for many of her photographs, she works in a darkened studio with a fiber optic light. Sandra moves freely around her set selectively adding light to various areas of the scene — she can actually be in the camera’s view, yet not become part of the final image.
Along with her commercial work, her floral still lifes show a unique ability to combine intense color and glowing light that makes her not only a photographer but an expert colorist as well. These photographic pieces have been created with inspiration from the colors of Gaugin and Modigliani, and the simplicity of Mapplethorpe and Blosfeldt.
In her black and white photography, Sandra displays sensitivity to tonal changes and subtle gradations that result in a sensuousness of imagery rare among modern photographers.
A painter has the ability to add texture and color where one wants; a photographer is limited to the objects they photograph. Sandra has developed a singular ability to combine the best qualities of both photography and painting.
